MAIRE KOLL
Maire Koll(i) (1956) graduated from the Tallinn Pedagogical Institute in 1980 as an art teacher and then as painter at the Estonian Academy of Arts. She has worked as an art educator and portraitist. At the same time, Maire Koll has been and still is a freelance artist.
Maire Koll's paintings stood out from those of other Estonian artists already in the 1980s. With her expressiveness, free and lively painting style, bold use of local tones.
"The expressive dynamism of her paintings has evolved into today's spontaneous yet consciously achieved state painting. She has combined
her natural talent as a colourist with powerful and temperamental colour compositions, mostly based on the local tones chosen as the basis
for the painting. Maire Koll is one of the neo-expressionist painters who came to life in the second half of the 1980s. She has developed
an intense expressiveness and a perceptible associative quality in her paintings, still today primarily through pure color. Her paintings
are always based on a specific underlying form, but color itself is often the most effective structure, subordinating all other dynamics
and imagery. There are no longer many painters like Maire Koll
on the Estonian art scene at this level who paint on the basis
of a so-called pure emotional state.." (Juta Kivimäe, 2013).
